OroClean from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) won not only this year's Venture Cup Cleantech competition, but also the main prize as overall winner of Venture Cup Startup Competition 2010 - and the prize of 250,000DKK that comes with the title!
OroClean has developed a centrifuge, which can remove the use of - and thereby the pollution from -mercury in smaller gold mining facilities. It is a solution that benefits as well the miner's health, his economy and the environment.
"OroCleans product has a highly motivated customer base because it increases the revenue of the individual miner. As well it resolves a relevant and very real health and environmental issue since it can help reduce up to 30% of the global pollution caused by mercury. The product will be produced locally and could be in production straight away. Many of these type of projects fail because integration with the local community and peoples everyday lives has not been thought through - this is a clear strength of OroClean" says Thilde Nørgaard Kristensen, Product Manager at Dong Energy and a member of Venture Cup's jury.
Venture Cup Cleantech 2010 was judged by a group of business professionals from our Venture Cup Jury:
Jacob Kunstmann (Shell), Lars Jags (Stirling), Stephan Skare Nielsen (Copenhagen Capacity), Martin Speiermann (PowerSense) & Thilde Nørgaard Kristensen (Dong Energy).
"We are speechless! We are so proud that the hard work we put into this project has finally paid off. It is of great importance that the product is recognized in this way in Venture Cup, and we now finally get the chance to test the prototype on site, in the gold mines" says the team behind Oroclean.
