Winners of Venture Cup Idea Competition 2010

In January 2010, a winning idea in each of our five categories was announced at large final events all around the country. Almost 700 students and scientists in 269 teams had sent in their business idea summaries during autumn, so excitement was building among them and their universities about who would win in the respective competitions: Venture Cup Applied Technology, Venture Cup Services, Venture Cup Life Science & Medtech, Venture Cup Cleantech and Venture Cup Software.

Winner: Venture Cup Applied Technology

Stjerneskibet Odense, Jan 14th 2010.

Super Light Structures (CBS/DTU) - weight reducing technology for load bearing building structures.

With a team made up from a DTU scientist and three CBS students Super Light Structures, and a technology that had already received interested from venture capitalists, Super Light Structures was always going to be a strong contender in Venture Cup.

More than 20 years ago DTU scientist Kristian Hertz started working an this construction technology, which opens up for constructing load bearing building structures with cost and energy savings of up to 50%. In 2009 his son Peter started the process of commercializing the invention. In the process Peter teamed up with Alexander Wulff and Mads Løntoft, both studying International Business at CBS. Peter, Alexander and Mads are now working full time commercializing Super Light Structures, which already has obtained proof-of-concept and a patent. On January 14th, the team took the 1st prize of 25,000 kr in Venture Cup Applied Technology at a celebratory final in Odense opened by Odense's mayor Anker Boye and Rektor for SDU, Jens Oddershede.

Computerfriend (AAU & Erhvervsakademi Sydvest) - friend to friend online computer service

Students from AAU entered their business idea Computerfriend.dk into Venture Cup Services, and won the first prize of 25,000. Their concept is a website which facilitates IT support among ordinary people and their IT savvy friends.

Thomas Wiborg Steen and Torben Christensen from AAU in Esbjerg and team mates Ulrik Blom and Morten Toft Holm from Erhvervsakademi Sydvest are good at IT. Therefore they are often contacted by frustrated friends and family in need of IT assistance. That is the basis of the idea behind Computerfriend, a platform which allows IT savvy people to provide computer support for their friends from home while getting paid. The team has already launched a beta of computerfriend.dk, and is now working on their strategy and getting investors to launch the final version.

Jury member, Carsten Collin from Ernst & Young mentions "it is a simple but innovative way of offering a new service in a time where social media is growing. The concept utilises the internet with a new twist and it can be implemented immediately."

With entrepreneurship becoming increasingly important for organisations and cities alike, both mayor of Roskilde, Poul Lindor Nielsen and chairman of RUC, Christian S. Nissen, showed up to congratulate the nominated teams and show their support and encouragement for new ideas

MalariTect (AU/ASB) - Technology which can diagnose immunity towards malaria medicin

According to WHT half of the world's population live in areas where malaria can occur. And immunity towards malaria medicin is a big and growing problem, which makes it difficult for doctors to determine which medicin to prescribe.

At the final of Venture Cup Life Science & Medtech at the new bio tech science park in Copenhagen, COBIS, students from Århus won 25.000kr for their idea MalariTect, a new technology which may be able to reduce the costs and time spent in determining immunity towards malaria medicine.

Jury member Stephan Christgau from Novo Seeds says about the winners "MalariTect has developed a new technology which makes it possible to diagnose immunity towards malaria medicin, but in principle the technology can be used in other genetic dianosis"

The team beind the idea has multidisciplinary skills; Anders Pedersen and Christian Jølck from ASB are commercially trained while Jakob Pedersen, David Tordrup and Jakob Virenfeldt from Aarhus Universitet are working with molecular biologi and medicine. In the opening speech at the final Martin E. Vigild, dean from DTU, commented on the importance of multidisciplinary skills in the succesful commercialisation of university research.

Blue Power Technologies (DTU/CBS) - optimizing wave technology

Cleantech was the buzzword of 2010 and riding this wave of attention, Keld Lundgaard and Jonathan Højberg, both DTU nanotech students, started developing a Polypower wave technology, a power take-off system aimed for ocean wave energy. The power take off system is able to convert mechanical energy stored in the ocean waves into electricity.

On of the aspect which the jury liked about Blue Power Technology was the the core of the team is "engineers thinking like entrepreneurs" namely Keld and Jonathan, both DTU nanotech students, who apart from Venture Cup also are active in entrepreneurship activities with DTU Stardust. Teaming up with Bjørn Lund-Nielsen from CBS to couple their technical capabilities with business savvy, Blue Power Technologies have created the basis for commercializing their product. Currently, Keld and Jonathan have mobilized no less than 12 of their fellow students in developing and testing the technology and are looking to integrate the development of their product in DTU classes, creating a "win-win situation", as Keld expresses it, for both them and the students.
